A grouper on the reef at night off Ambergris Caye, Belize

Diving

Night dive

6:00 PM departureEvening

The reef changes completely after dark. Parrotfish sleep wrapped in their own mucus cocoons, octopus and lobster come out of the coral, basket stars unfurl, and tarpon hunt in the beam of your torch — which is the part nobody forgets.

Most night dives run inside Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where the topography is familiar and the marine life is dense. Boats leave the dock around 6:00 PM, in the water at dusk.
