A sailing catamaran at the dock on Ambergris Caye, Belize

Snorkelling

Caye Caulker day sail

8:15 AM – 4:00 PMFull day

A catamaran runs south inside the reef to Caye Caulker, the smaller, slower sister island where the main street is still sand and the local motto — go slow — is painted on the side of a building.

The day breaks into two snorkel stops on the way down, a few hours ashore for lunch, a swim at the Split and a wander, then the sail home with the wind behind you. Inside the barrier reef the water stays flat, so this is a sail rather than a crossing.

Good to know

Is the sail rough?
Rarely. The barrier reef takes the swell about a mile offshore, so the water between the reef and the islands is usually flat.
